In addition to the dive training, you will have the chance to learn a great deal about this tropical marine environment, learn a little Spanish and partake in expeditions to a wide variety of exotic destinations in this beautiful and historically rich area. You will be based at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, and learn about the diverse wildlife living both above and below the waves.

How this program makes a difference:
The data GVI obtains at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve provides an invaluable baseline to assess the health of reefs found in pristine locations. Since the inception of this expedition, and with the assistance of their partner organizations, GVI have amassed one of the largest existing databases related to the condition, health and changes of any section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This data is now being used by GVI and its partners to promote the management of the reserve's resources in a more sustainable manner.

Highlights:

  • Live and work on a remote jungle base
  • Learn to scuba dive
  • Participate in monitoring dives
  • Get your PADI Cavern Diver training
  • Learn about the reef and how to identify fish and coral
  • See dolphins, sharks or manatees
  • Participate in night monitoring of turtles laying eggs
  • Enjoy cultural visits to Mayan ruins
  • Learn some basic Spanish

PADI Dive Qualifications:
GVI provides an exceptional standard of training in many internationally recognized qualifications. Included in this expedition are PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water, the GVI PADI Coral Reef Research Diver Distinctive Specialty, and an optional PADI Cavern Diver certification.

Additional Optional PADI Qualifications:
There are 2 additional PADI certifications you can choose to participate in, but do note that these require additional payment to the local dive centers: PADI Divemaster and Rescue Diving including Emergency First Response Certification.

Internships and Field Work:
By participating in a 10 week expedition you will be eligible to apply for an Internship or Job working in the field with GVI.
