Teach Children in Costa Rica

Global Vision International

Learn Spanish, teach in communities and explore one of the most beautiful areas of Costa Rica. As a volunteer you will live and work in the town of Orosi, in the Central Valley, just over an hour South East from San José, surrounded by coffee and banana plantation-covered mountains.
This project runs in conjunction with leaders and teachers of the communities, to assist with of educational reinforcement programs or "aulas abiertas". These "open classes" aim to help children and adults who otherwise may not have the opportunity of a full formal education or who need educational reinforcement. GVI volunteers also assist the understaffed schools in the region. All the communities are within about 10km from Orosi. Volunteers will work with the local teacher and teach in the schools in the mornings until early afternoon, assisting children who need more attention with literacy, maths and also giving English lessons. Other teaching activities include sports, arts and agriculture. Work in the "aulas abiertas" will take place in the afternoon. Volunteers stay with host families for complete cultural immersion and the opportunity to practise speaking Spanish. Thirty hours of one on one Spanish classes (based on skill level) are included and are highly recommended for those Volunteers with no previous Spanish experience or those who want to brush up on their Spanish skills. At weekends, included in the program are various excursions, including a multi-destination day visit taking in the Irazú Volcano, a visit to Tapantí National Park and a weekend hike around the Orosi Valley.
