Background information on British Association of Snowsport Instructors

BASI - BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF SNOWSPORT INSTRUCTORS BASI is the nationally and internationally recognised body for training and examining British Snowsports Instructors.

The BASI mission is to create a national and international reputation for excellence through the provision of the highest quality training and support services for snowsport instructors.  Originally formed in 1963, BASI currently has over 5,000 members who are actively involved in delivering instruction to recreational ski and snowboard enthusiasts at snowsports centres and dry ski slopes in the UK, as well as at ski resorts in 24 countries world-wide. BASI training courses are run by highly qualified trainers who have been specially selected for their skills, knowledge, experience and teaching ability.

The course syllabus will include lesson planning, personal performance, group development, technical evening workshops, video feedback and the preparation of personal performance profiles.  Trainers attend regular workshops and training sessions to ensure that quality is maintained across all courses, with an annual Trainers’ Conference held specifically to develop BASI course content with particular emphasis on the quality of course delivery and assessment. BASI provides courses in five disciplines: Alpine, Snowboard, Nordic Cross Country, Telemark and Adaptive.

Qualifications within each discipline are available and BASI is now encouraging members to cross-over from their favoured discipline and to investigate and experience other disciplines. All BASI Trainers are qualified to the highest International level with the ISTD (International Ski Teacher Diploma) and the ISIA (International Ski Instructor's Association) qualifications. BASI qualifications can be achieved by taking a course with one of BASI’s approved GAP Course providers, New Generation and ICE.
