Oyster is one of the smallest and most personal Gap Year Organisations in the industry and is a member of the Year Out Group. We offer paid work in the Australian Outback and also in one of 3 top Canadian Ski Resorts. In all of our paid placements you can earn a local wage and have a fantastic Gap Year experience. We also offer voluntary placements in a variety of worldwide destinations.
One of Oyster's main aims is to provide an environment where you can get fully immersed into the culture you are living in. You are not there as a tourist traveling through the country for a few weeks. You are there long enough to get truly under the skin of the country.
It is really important that a Gap Year is challenging. A Gap Year is all about gaining independence and confidence and that means learning how to deal with challenging situations. A Gap Year with Oyster provides the perfect balance between independence and support. Participants are encouraged to solve their own problems but can be safe in the knowledge that they can fall back on to the Oyster Safety Net should they need to. In each destination we have a dedicated representative whose job is to be a helpful friend to our participants.
We have a wide variety of options available to applicants. Participants could be teaching and trekking in the Himalayas to working on an AIDS Awareness project in Zambia. We also have animal conservation opportunities in Romania working with the Brown Bears and in Kenya working with Elephants and Black Rhino. We have voluntary placements in:
- Brazil
- Chile
- India
- Kenya
- Nepal
- Romania
- Tanzania
- Zambia
And paid placements in Australia and Canada.
We take the time to get to know our applicants personally. We always prefer to meet them for a face to face interview and briefing session at our office in East Sussex. We then run a Pre Departure Course for all of our destinations. This is the chance to meet the rest of the group that they will be traveling with. Going with a group is often one of the highlights for many of our participants.
With Oyster you will get:
- the certainty of a well-chosen job or voluntary placement with everything arranged in advance
- a personal service from our experienced staff in the UK, who will get to know you very well before you depart
- thorough preparation in the UK and on arrival
- excellent support from our representative abroad who will meet you at the airport, settle you in and be there to help with problems if you need it
- set group departures throughout the year. *
- a group of fellow travelers to share the experience with
- financial protection through our ATOL bond
* Our Australia placement works slightly differently. You can be picked up at Brisbane Airport on any Thursday of the year. On arrival you will be with a group of people for the first week during which time you will rest and recieve full training. Most employers will then employ only 1 or 2 people. Group departures are difficult as we cannot guarantee that you will all be working in the same part of Australia.
