Our Law and Human rights placements are available in 8 different countries worldwide. These include: Ghana, South Africa, Togo, Morocco, Mongolia, Senegal and Cambodia. We also have stand alone Law placements in China too.
Regardless of which area you choose to focus, a Law/Law and Human Rights placement you will gain an invaluable opportunity to: change existing legislation, directly impact on people lives, provide legal aid as well as furthering your own experience and enhancing your own CV.
Each of these placement offers a unique and fascinating experience, individualised to the volunteer and their preferences. We aim to match your own areas of interest to the needs of the local community . This will ensure that you both will receive the maximum benefit.
For our Law and Human Rights placements one main focus is on: education and providing information and help for: abused women, refugees, prisoners, youths. Others include: monitoring election procedures, transitional justice, looking at police reform and organising campaigns.
For example, in places such as South Africa, we also work alongside a number of NGOs including: Philisa Abafazi Bethu (www.philisaabafazi.org) and have a strong relationship with the United Nations High Commission for refugees. We work closely with a number of local NGO’S too. These include: Women's Legal Resource Centre, International Peace commission, Rapcan, Scalibrini, Molo-Sangalolo, and the Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons.
Our Law placements delve into more legal aspects, where you will be based in a typical law firm setting. Here you can focus on: banking law, mergers, acquisitions, corporate intellectual property, taxation and insolvency. In the past volunteers on this placement have got to interview clients and shadow supervising lawyers in court.
Although some of the projects are only open to people with experience of law, even if you are just a willing volunteer on one of the Ghanaian or South African programmes, rest assured you’ll do much more than make tea. All of our legal placements are demanding and must be taken seriously. You’re likely to be working normal office hours and you will most certainly be welcomed as a valued part of the team.
One thing is certain, you can never have too much legal experience. Taking part on any of our Law/Law and Human Rights placements is sure to enhance your knowledge, broaden your understanding of various legal systems and make you stand out from the crowd in what is always a highly competitive field.
