NICE/11-10 - Volunteers for an organic orange farm in JapanTitle : IKATA Programme : STANDARD Project type : Agricultural work Age : 18 to 70 Places : 6 Country : Japan Travel terminal : Osaka (8hours by bus and train). From Tokyo, 8hours by bullet train or 14hours by midnight bus Dates : 01/03/2010-14/03/2010 Location : About 350 km northwest of Osaka. Satamisaki Peninsula in Ehime prefecture . Work : Organized with a local volunteer group of young people, the Kikuya Community Group. Ikata town is famous for oranges that is the main industry there. But the town has been facing the depopulation, lack of workers since most of young people leave the town. The number of abandoned orange farms is increasing and the town is losing traditions and customs. They want to work with volunteer to animate the town and revive orange farms. Divided in small groups of 2-3, volunteers will work with farmers in each orange organic farm, mainly harvesting and taking care of orange trees. They will also help clean up the town. Accomodation : Volunteer house in the town. Sleeping bag required. Special requirements : Some knowledge of Japanese is recommended, though not compulsory. The group will consist of 2 national and 4 international volunteers. Study : Rural development. Volunteers are encouraged to bring information about this issue in their country.
