Summer schools etc.

If you did the ski season, it would be good to have plan and some career goals afterwards. Author: ICAL_Pete
Subject: To do TEFL or not...
Posted: 27 August 2009 at 10:09

You'll get plenty of (conflicting) advice so... here's some more!

1. Do you have a passport from the EU such as the UK or Ireland? If you don't then you pretty well out of luck since non-EU citizens can't work in Europe without a LOT of visa hassles.

2. Get qualified. That means a degree and a TEFL Certificate. Naturally I'd recommend our TEFL Cert but to be sure check out the TEFL CertificateTEFL Course Review which has reviews by former students of different courses to make sure the one you're taking is the best.

3. Don't bother with CELTA. It's a massively intensive course for experienced teachers only. Take it after a couple of years teaching but not straight in as a newbie.

4. You don't need to speak the language of your host country to teach English. These days you should aim to use English Only in the classroom.

5. Contracts are usually for 1 year starting around September (the beginning of the school year).

Hope this helps!

Edited by ICAL_Pete - 27 August 2009 at 10:11

Make sure your get your qualification from a company like i-to-i who are accredited by the ODLQC (the Open and Distance Learning Council). Most schools will accept this kind of qualification but it's always good to check with the school you are hoping to teach at; contact them and find out what qualifications a teacher will need and which accrediting bodies they acknowledge. If they accept your qualifications you shouldn't have any trouble finding a job. This website is really good for TEFL info http://www.onlinetefl.com

Good luck!
