Although a point to point rail tickets can work out cheaper, the beauty of a rail tour pass is the flexibility you get. You can jump on and off trains as you wish, so no queuing up for tickets. It's also very easy to just go off somewhere spontaneously, or stay in a place for a bit longer than planned. This level of flexibility can mean that even if a rail pass is more expensive it can still be worth doing.
