I've applied for a couple of resort accountant roles for 2011/2012 and I'm wondering (if I get a job) if the salary I actually get paid will realistically be enough to live on when you take into account all the socialising that will be done etc. in the course of making new friends. I know I won't get paid anywhere near what I do in the UK (I've applied because I'd like a change in lifestyle) but at the same time I don't want to spend the season dipping into my own savings. I'd either like to break even or save a little bit - is this realistic?
I've spoken to a few people who've done seasons as chalet hosts/bar staff and they've said they have ended up spending their own money to stay out there and finish the season.
I know its all about the experience etc etc, and I'd like to do a couple of seasons, but I do need to have some cash in the bank for when I come back to the UK so I can eat and put a roof over my head etc.
I'd be particularly interested to hear from anyone who's done a season as an accountant of course! Thank you!

Hi, I used to work as an accountant in the uk and moved to the ski world about 5 years ago...I teach in Courchevel/Meribel so I can tell you a little about that area.
Cost will largely depend on what resort you chose and what sort of lifestyle you would like to lead... If you're based in somewhere like Courchevel you're looking at 3-4k euros a bed for the season and then something like 6k for a bedsit. If you live further down the mountain saint bon or Bozel then this would be cheaper. You then have to cover to lift pass cost, which if you're a worker is approx 400euros(Courchevel pass not 3 valleys). Pizzas cost roughly 10euros and a pint of beer would be about 5euros to give you an idea of "cheap" food and drink prices. Do all your shopping down the valley in Moutiers and you will save a lot on food expenses. A can of coke in the bakery will cost you over 2euros, whereas in the supermarket you get 6 for 2euros. I have no idea how much accountants get paid in resort but if you budget something like 1,200 euros per month that should cover your accomodation and food in resort for 5months. Add a little extra for any partying you want to do. Other resorts in europe accomodation and food would be cheaper, the 3 valleys is amongst the most expensive. In every resort there are cheaper parts though if you're willing to live outside the centre. Not sure how the pay would compare in other resorts Hope this helps |
