South senior Patrick Burke has not gone into a meet fresh this season.
He's put in lots of mileage throughout the season hoping it will pay off in the final weeks. A year ago, he had a solid start to the season, but he was injured with tendonitis three weeks in. He finished the year at regionals, but he was in severe pain. This year, South coach Matt Luck tried a new philosophy with Burke, and he's embraced it. "Instead of having a really good beginning of the season, we wanted to have a good end to the season," Burke said. "That's when it matters most." Burke is a three-sport athlete who also competes in swimming and cross country. He is one of two seniors on varsity this season along with teammate Danny Volpe. "I'm really hoping all the work I have put in pays off," Burke said. "I hope I can finally make it to state. That is my main goal." Taking a break Riverside's No. 1 and No. 2 runners sat out last week at Medina to rest. Zack McBride, the team's top runner, and Mike Campbell plan to compete on Friday in the Premier Athletic Conference meet. Did you see? -- The Chagrin Falls girls won the Division II/III title at the Medina Cross Country Festival. Jessica Walker was the team's top finisher in fifth (21:45). She was followed by Allie Dustin (seventh, 21:57), Claire Barcelo (10th, 22:26), Rae Carleton (24th, 23:05) and Kate Girouard (27th, 23:12).
