I've been to chamonix 3/4times. Some of the best and most challenging skiing in the alps. However it is split round 4 different areas which can be hard to get too if you dont have your own transport. Luckily when i've been our chalet has carted us round in their minibus.

Nightlife is okay, but its definitely not as lively as Val T etc.

You will still have a great time though

oh also, a pint on the slopes can range between 8 and 10 euros, and not much cheaper in the village!!

I worked in Chamonix in Winter 10/11. Good selection of bars, but nightclub wise it's pretty poor.

Price wise, beer was anywhere from €3 to €7 a pint, depending on which brand you wanted. Cheapest bar is Munster in Cham Sud, usually opens first weekend in December. Apres-wise, La Terrasse and Chambre Neuf (known as C9) are the most popular. C9 does get very, very busy for apres; often 4 or 5 deep at the bar and virtually no standing room, but it's worth it.

Getting around without your own transport isn't too bad, providing you study the bus numbers carefully - if in doubt, ask the bus driver. Buses are free with your lift pass too. There is a train service, but this is infrequent and is not covered on your lift pass.

Good luck, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!
