Has anyone ever worked for PGL or Acorn adventure or anyone else? I want to go and work abroad in an outdoor centre - anyone know if any of these companies are any good?

I nearly worked for Acorn, I got a job with them but did not take them up on it. They seem like a good outfit though, very professional and growing too.
PGL, I cant comment, they are probably the biggest in the out door game so must be good, dont know a great deal more. What are you wanting to get out of a season? Have you any outdoor qualifications??? Let me know |

I think that Canvas Holidays are still looking for Wild and Active couriers. You would be working on a campsite in France organising wildlife/nature based activities for adults and kids, as well as things like canoeing, horse riding and stuff.

Hi All,
I have heard of Acorn Adventure, they run outdoor activity Centres in France mainly. PGl run there centres all over Uk and abroad. I have recently had an interview with Canvas Holidays, and now i have been offered a job with them as a Campsite Courier going out to France on 4th April. Callum |

I am working for pgl at the minute, iv worked for both canvas and pgl and would say pgl is the better company to work for as in the way you gain qualifications and got a future and you have a good time, but if your after a really good time and like a drink or 2 canvas is the way to go. |

I've worked in this industry. I've been a leader, coach and spent a
year in sales and marketing for one of Supercamps competitors. As an activity leader you would be expected to lead the activities for a group of no more than 16 children. I think supercamps is still mainly sports based, so a lot of the activities will be like coaching basketball etc, but I know they do arts, drama etc as well. What age do you teach? If you have experience with younger children (4-6) it may be worth enquiring about being a leader for that group. The activities are less sports based, more games etc (jungle walks, nature hunts!) Normally teachers are sounded out for managers job, as due to OFSTED requirements the manager has to have so much experience. You will earn roughly £210-250 for a weeks work. It is hard work and you have to be the life and soul of the camp. The kids will not turn up to do the actvities, they will turn up to see you! Check out the other companies as well to see if one is in your area - Kings Camps, Camp Beaumont, Barracudas, EAC Activity Camps, Cross Keys, Mini Minors You may want to consider residential ones as well although they normally contract people May-Sept - PGL, Camp Beaumont, EAC Activity Camps, Kids Klub, Cross-Keys Edited by administrator - 26 January 2010 at 23:20 |

In know this is old but for future reference:
I worked for PGL in 08 and loved it. Though I think it would have been better in a smaller centre, I worked at BP where there were over 250 staff members and the bitchiness was awful, if you weren't in with the seniors nothing was done for you, and if people weren't friendly with you you could get into trouble for a lovely array of accusions which generally were rubbish (I got caught twice that season in this way). And make sure you trust a senior before you tell them something as they're very gossipy! Tips: Log your hours and know your rights, some seniors will try overwork you if given the chance. Don't spend all of your measly £80 a week wage on tobacco and alcohol a week after payday, you have 3 weeks till the next one!  Try not to bitch too much, it WILL come back and bite you in the arse! Sign up for any and all training available, it'll be worth it later on! It really is good though, very much uni without the homework! Edited by Nikadi - 17 February 2010 at 13:23 |

£80 a week first year, about £500 a month after food/accom costs second year if I remember correctly. You are classed as an apprentic first year even though you don't do your NVQ which is a pain!
You live on site normally shring a room with at least one other person I was in a four person room for my time there! Was fun though!

PGL Is well worth it, I'm currently in my second season working at PGL and its fantastic, Its definitely one of the best outdoor companies you could work for, I have heard bad things about Acorn.
PGL also offer fantastic training :) Oliver

To compare last year Acorn was paying 75euros's per week, cash in hand and some jobs paid a bit more money into your bank account depending on which job role you were doing. (we're talking £10-£20 per week) They will also coach and train you and put you through qualifications needed if you are interested. Acorn is still very much a family run business rather than a corporate like PGL.
Canvas pays better, but for me Acorn was more fun. but out on the sites its very much Acorn versus PGL -just like Canvas Versus Holidaybreak. We love to hate each other and there can be lot of ****ging off. we all love it really!!!
I have worked for Canvas, Acorn, and now Holidaybreak (Eurocamp). Holidaybreak also owns PGL is practially the biggest player in both the Luxury camping oud Outdoor persuits industry, Its really a case of each to their own. You could get on site for a really good company, and hate the people your working with - and thats whats its all about really. Oh and the bigger the campsite - the bitchier it generally gets as a general rule!!
Oh and some very good advice above from Nikadi!!!! BUt... one thing to bear in mind is that if you do work in the tourism industry, it is very long hours, and working over 35 hours a week is the norm...otherwise nothing would be done.

I visited a PGL centre near Caythorpe in Lincolnshire and was very impressed. I wasn't aware there was so much bitchiness among the ranks though- kind of a turn off as I wouldn't want a summer ruined by backstabbers.

I worked for PGL in Embrun, France, cell phone spy software as a multi activity instructor and
raft guide. It was great fun for the half season I experienced and I met
some lovely people who are still some of my good friends today.

Hi there Snacvan, Im a 6 year veteran of PGL mainly working at the Boreatton park site 'Shrewsbury' but also I've worked at Little Canada 'Isle of Wight'..
The company is great to work for and you meet a great range of people, the wages depend on age and qualifications, I was contracted 10 months of the year @ £998 per 4 weeks and take home was £660ish Im 27 and lived on site in a shared room '2 people'. At B.P. there is a bar on site and BBQ areas which we used a lot 'even in november  ' and @ 15 miles from the nearest big town 'Shrew' nights out are common and every year we have a fancy dress pub crawl which is always a laugh... Me as Tinker bell!? There is a chance to develop skills in watersports and experiance all the activitys on site including the pool even if you decide to work in the kitchens or on the retail team or even house keeping or maintenance teams.. Some centers are huge and offer a lot of various jobs... Hope this helps, I've never looked back and have enjoyed every season so far |

Yes I have worked for PGL and I think that they are rubbish. I had an accident at work and, instead of support and sympathy I was ordered back to England, sacked and later, invited (?) to an interview which turned out to be a cross examination trying to make out that I was a liar and incompetent, which struck me as odd as I have numerous written testimonials to the contrary

Biggest not always best. In my opinion they are VERY lucky to have escaped serious accidents to their guests as their attitude to safety is, to me, flamboyant to say the least, which they will, of course try to hush up

PGL is great if you like being treated like a slave. You get very little pay, plus you get a contract which only applies to PGL and not the employee, basically they can get you doing what ever they want, when ever they want and for as long as they want and there is nothing you can do about it no matter what position you applied for. If you are lucky enough you could work for the catering department and automatically get put on an apprenticeship scheme which means they don't have to pay you minimum wage because of this, haha so great news you'll get a certificate showing you're competent at scraping plates and serving chips. Or maybe you're lucky enough to be Activity staff where you could gain some medioka qualifications which are only recognised within PGL so you don't leave for a better job. After a while for working for PGL you soon figure this out and gain some sense and leave, which is what they want you to do. All they want is cheap labour! Plus there isn't much fun as most things are against the rules and they wont hesitate you get rid of you if you decide to have too much fun. They love young, stupid YES people!
If you want my advise go work abroad for smaller companies, don't stay too long and have fun!
