ZERMATT
THE RESORT
Dominated by Switzerland's most famous landmark - the Matterhorn, Zermatt is one of the oldest all-round resorts in the world. Surrounded by 29 peaks over 13,100ft it is easy to be captivated by the scenery around you in this famous old town.
Zermatt has been a destination resort for climbers, mountaineers and alpine adventurers with a love of the outdoors since the 19th century.
For many guests from all over the world, Zermatt epitomises their image of Switzerland: high-alpine, awe-inspiring and original. Almost one-third of the 4,000-metre high mountains in the Alps are grouped around this word-famous health resort, which has been visited by mountaineers from all around the world since the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865.
The ski area is not only the highest in the alps – it is also one of the best developed and most convenient in the world, ensuring thrilling sporting experiences on some of the steepest slopes – and is open 365 days a year.
Many national ski and snowboard teams base their training here during the summer months due to the snow sure nature of the resort and the fantastic facilities that Zermatt has to offer.
With a vast skiing area, including runs across the border down to Cervinia in Italy you will never be short of terrain to improve your skiing/snowboarding skills.
Once off the hill the relaxed atmosphere of the town is the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy your evenings. Enjoy one of the soothing saunas or maybe loosen up in a different way with some ice climbing or ice skating.
Zermatt village is a pedestrian zone with all cars being left at the bottom of the mountain at Tasch, this makes the town very quiet and pleasant but means it is smoke free too. Do listen out when walking around in town though, as the electric cars do have a habit of sneaking up on you and then sounding their horn which can catch you by surprise.
With over 100 restaurants and many more bars & clubs you will never be short of ideas in the evenings & days off.
