After heavy bushfires inflicted my hometown of Newcastle in Australia, it was a great relief to finally begin the journey of a lifetime to the picturesque town of Banff and snowfields of Norquay. Even though it was a long travelling schedule, with long stopovers and a nearly missed flight connection in Vancouver, it was a wonderful feeling to finally arrive and feel the cold fresh air (-4 degrees) in Calgary.

Calgary was the city for our orientation with the aim for the groups going to Banff and Nakiska to get to know each other, gather essentials and become accustomed to the lifestyle of Canada and its time zone.During our stay in Calgary we checked out a few of the local tourist attractions by day and a few of the pubs by night. Although there was a lot of fun to be had we also sorted out a few important task like getting a SIN number (Social Insurance Number needed to work in Canada), a Canadian Bank account and a mobile phone.

Unfortunately our stay in Calgary had to end all too soon, which meant saying goodbye to the new friendships that we had made and the big comfy beds of the Westin.

On the journey to Banff we were able to stop at the local town of Canmore and purchase the last needed items before moving into our new home for the next four weeks at the Banff Alpine Centre (we even have deer out the back).

On arrival it was plain to see that Banff is one of the most beautiful places in the world with its mountain walls surrounding the town. We have had a few days getting to know Banff and tasting a few of the local delicacies like the Lumberjack, the biggest sandwich I have ever seen. It has been a great start and I am ready to begin training on the mountain.
