A pioneering Mara eco-camp, opened in 1998, Base camp Maasai Mara is a moderately sized tented camp in Koiyaki Group Ranch, just outside the Maasai Mara National Reserve.  Close to Talek Gate and the small settlement of Talek, the camp is ranged in riverine forest along the north bank of the Talek River, which forms the reserve’s north-east boundary.  The camp has direct access to the reserve via private footbridge.  Basecamp Maasai Mara achieved world fame in 2006 by hosting Barack Obama during his visit to Kenya two years before he became US president.

VOLUNTEER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteers’ activities include environmental monitoring (e.g. wildlife); ecological restoration such as re-vegetation and weed removal, and educating the community about the natural environment. Activities are determined during the weekly team meetings. Other activities will include preparation of bed seeds/Nursery tree planting and transferring to designated areas, managing the plants like spacing and watering.

VOLUNTEER SKILLS

Volunteers who have the passion for environmental activities are welcomed in this project. Volunteers are expected to come with ideas to share with the project team in a constructive manner. Volunteers should have good skills of dealing with community, as well as be open-minded and flexible.

Airport Transfer

You will be met by our representative at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi from where you are transferred to the accommodations in Nairobi itself. Volunteers who will be already in Kenya or arriving overland would need to give us their contact details so that the pickup can be arranged from a specific location.
