Royan
We recently finished the season of 2010 at Marennes, in the region of Royan. The flat salt marsh terrain made for easy cycling, very handy as we never had a car. There are cycle tracks on the bridges to La Tremblade & Isle-de-Oléron. In a 25km round trip you can visit La Palmyre, the Zoo & the surf beaches near the Lighthouse. There is a wealth of things to do whilst cycling through the smooth single track lanes of the bassin Ostréicole, where you can see Birds, like Storks nesting in the trees, Locals fishing in the Dykes, small Villages, & lots of small oyster beds.
Visit the tidal Watermill at Moulin Lodges; the proprietor there will tell you all about the old mill, the resident Bats, & the Oysters of the region. Brouage, an old 17th century port, now left high-&-dry. Cardinal Richelieu built this when the Salt Industry of the time was prolific. Saint Sornin Castle, a high point of the marsh has some terrific views. The Steam Train at La Tremblade takes you to Saujon, but get off at Mornac-sur-Seudre, a very pretty village, restaurants, craft shops, port, & oyster sheds. The train takes cycles.
