Your contract
You will be employed by Harding Brothers (Guernsey) Limited, for whom we recruit as agents.
Successful applicants will initially be offered a contract for a period of six months. We will then review your performance during that period and, subject to your performance, will look to offer you another contract or perhaps offer you the opportunity of becoming a product or service specialist. In this way, you can develop your skills and experience in anticipation of a return to land-based retail or spa work.
For those who demonstrate the right attitude and breadth of skills, we offer assistant manager and then manager positions over time. For current retail managers this can be offered as a fast track option within your first contract.
Your living conditions
You will typically share a two berth cabin with another member of the retail team. Different ships vary in terms of what are known as deck privileges, but it is wise to pack a smart set of clothes for the times when you wish to exchange the informality of the crew bar for some of the passenger areas.
Your hours
The hours on "sea days" (when the vessel is at sea for the whole day) tend to be long, with some ships operating from 9 am until 10 pm.
Conversely, as a duty free retailer, we are required to shut when in port, with the exception of a small port shop that sells the day to day necessities. On these "port days" (unless you are on port manning duties or on duty in the port shop, when you will be required to remain on board), you will usually be free to disembark and visit the ports on the ship's itinerary.
The spa also tends to be quieter on port days with many of the passengers taking the opportunity of seeing the sights.
At the end of each cruise, on the "turnaround day" (typically from 8 am until 4 pm) you will be required to assist in the loading and organising of new stock.
